They started as a school band in Magdeburg and had their wordlwide breakthrough soon after that. With a little showcase at Radio SAW, Tokio Hotel presented their fourth studioalbum “Kings of Suburbia”. Elisa Sowieja from Volksstimme spoke with the twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz.
How does being home feel?
Bill: Wonderful! Sadly we never actually get to see anything of the city we’re in at that momen – although we already know Magdeburg by now. But we’re still happy to be here.
You played a concert here, in front of two dozen people. How did that feel?
Bill: It was kind of odd! But I do like being so close to the people you’re performing for once in a while.
Tom: I’m always a little more excited than usual. It just feels more intimate, performing in front of such a small crowd.
You’ve already been in Germany since the past week. What did you do since then?
Tom: We’ve been promoting the new album from the morning until the evening. We start at 9 in the morning and that just goes on until 10 at night. Then we go to sleep and drive to the next city.

„Tokio Hotel“ feiert momentan ihr Comeback. Am 3.10.14 kam ihr neues Studio-Album „Kings of Suburbia“ raus. Dass die Musiker offensichtlich erwachsen geworden sind, h�rt man an ihrem neuen Sound. Trotzdem sind die Jungs f�r einen Spa� immer noch zu haben. Jetzt gab die Band eines ihrer lustigsten Interviews.

„Ich sage immer, dass ich tschechischer Pornostar bin.“, diese Ausrede nutzt Tom Kaulitz, wenn er sich in seiner Wahl-Heimat Los Angeles bei neuen Leuten vorstellt. Nicht schlecht, was wir da so lesen. Die Band „Tokio Hotel“ stand dem Magazin „Vice“ jetzt Rede und Antwort und was da f�r spontane Antworten kamen, ist wirklich lustig.

In L.A sind die Zwillinge unbekannt! Ganz bodenst�ndig gibt Bill h�ufig an, Student zu sein. So ist Tom seinem Bruder definitiv eine Nasenl�nge voraus, wenn es darum geht, sich vorzustellen. Denn als Beweis, dass er wirklich ein tschechischer Pornostar sei, hat Tom schon die n�chste knackige Antwort parat: „Ich pack einfach immer mein Ding aus. Das reicht als Beweis.“

Und wer jetzt denkt, das war die einzige versexte Antwort irrt. Bei der Frage, ob sie nicht mal Lust h�tten ins Berghain, wohl dem besten Club Berlins mit eigenem Darkroom, zu gehen, �berschlagen sich die Antworten.

„Im Berghain gibt es auch Darkrooms? Dann will ich erst Recht dahin!“, so Bill. Auch Georg w�rde es sich definitiv mal angucken und nat�rlich ist Gustav auch dabei: „Den Dark Room auf jeden Fall. Das war das �berzeugende Argument.“ Klar, dass das ein gefundenes Fressen f�r Tom ist, der mit seiner Antwort die Leser zum Lachen bringt: „Dann kriegen die auch mal was ab.“

Einfach super, die Band ist so locker wie lange nicht mehr. Scheinbar hat ihnen die Schaffenspause wirklich gut getan. In dem Interview wirken „Tokio Hotel“ so sympathisch und frei wie nie. Und auch ihr neues Album schl�gt ein wie eine Bombe und das d�rfte bei den Vieren mit Sicherheit auch f�r gute Laune sorgen.

BILL: Nem nagyon, mert szerencs�re egy ez egy nagy luxus lift, de igaz, hogy t�nyleg ir�ny�t�sm�ni�s vagyok, sosem engedem �t az ir�ny�t�st m�snak. N�ha szeretn�k sokkal laz�bb lenni, �s visszavonul�t f�jni, hogy csak azokra a dolgokra koncentr�ljak, ami fontos. De folyton figyelnem kell mindenre �s dupl�n ellen�rz�m, hogy p�ld�ul bez�rtam-e az ajt�t, �s szerintem el�gg� r�m�lom lenne sz�momra, ha beragadn�k a liftbe.

RIPORTER: Az �j dalotokban, az �ll, hogy szeresd, aki viszont szeret. Szerett�l m�r olyat, aki nem szeretett viszont?
BILL: Igen, velem is el�fordult. Szerintem sok ember azt hiszi, hogy h�ress�gk�nt v�dve vagy az ilyenekt�l, de igaz�b�l velem is el�fordult.

You might have heard it. Tokio Hotel released a new album on the German day of unity. It’s called Kings of Suburbia and – you can calm down now – it did not turn into the “defining record” of our generation. But it did have the potential to be. The requirements for a unexpected comeback are picture perfect: Four years ago Bill and Tom Kaulitz moved to L.A. and, with that, away from the craziness that has been following them around the globe since the release of their single “Durch den Monsun”. Tokio Hotel performed in front of the eiffel tower and filled stadiums in Japan, they even got israeli teenagers to learn German. Imagine half the world watching you while you grow up and you having to explain your sexual orientation over and over again. [...] A few minutes later I get escorted into a double suite. Soon the four popstars are going to come out of the other room, partly shuffling and partly on heels – because Bill is wearing pumps with french fries on them. All four grin at me.

Noisey: Bill, at the press conference on thursday you said that you’ve never been to the “Berghain”. I have something over you. I went there for the first time two weeks ago.
Bill: And? How was it?

Tom Kaulitz: Nem. Kezdetben nem gondoltunk semmit. M�r azzal kock�ztattunk, hogy olyan hossz� sz�netet tartottunk. Ha a mai zeneiparban nem adsz ki dalt hetente, akkor m�ris van egy �j m�v�sz a l�that�ron �s te m�r csak t�rt�nelem vagy. Nem t�r�dt�nk ezzel, t�ljutottunk ezen. �n furcs�nak tal�lom, amikor a zen�szek �j dalokat adnak ki �s �j albumokat k�sz�tenek meg�ll�s n�lk�l. Ez nem �gy m�k�dik, ha val�ban kreat�v vagy. A dal�r�s id�t ig�nyel.
Bill Kaulitz: Nem hiszek abban, hogy csak le�lsz �s megc�lzol egy bizonyos c�lk�z�ns�get. Ezzel az albummal olyan zen�t k�sz�tett�nk, amit mi magunk is szeret�nk hallgatni a mag�n�letben. Ez az egyetlen m�dja a sikernek: amikor te magad gondolod azt, hogy ez a legjobb dolog, amit kiadt�l a kezedb�l.

Tokio Hotel: Starting over

Tokio Hotel are back, and not only Bill and Tom Kaulitz are – outwardly – barely recognizable, also their music style radically changed.
D�sseldorf. Tokio Hotel from Madgeburg broke all the records as a teen-band in the 00s. But soon the success overwhelmed the young musicians, Bill and Tom Kaulitz, which is why they decided to flee into anonymity in 2009. In Los Angeles the, by now, 25-year old twins didn’t just find their luck, but also the muse for a new album. They talked with us about “Kings Of Suburbia”, their adoptive home and the sins of their youth.
Tom and Bill, you’re not teenagers anymore – you now have to break into the “adult pop-music” market. Were you aware of that fact when you recorded the album?
Tom Kaulitz: No. In the beginning we didn’t think of anything. We were already taking a risk with taking so much time off. If you don’t release a song every week in the music business of today, there’s already a new artist on the horizon and you’re history. We didn’t care about that, we still went through with it. I think it’s strange when musicians release new songs and work on new albums non-stop. It just doesn’t work like that when you’re really creative. Writing songs takes some time.
Bill Kaulitz: I don’t believe that you can sit down and cater to a specific target market. With this album, we just made the music that we would listen to in private as well. That’s the only way success can happen: When you yourself think that it’s the best thing out there.

Sie begannen als Sch�lerband in Magdeburg und starteten dann weltweit durch.
In einem Mini-Konzert bei Radio SAW stellten Tokio Hotel jetzt ihr viertes Studioalbum "Kings of Suburbia" vor. Am Rande sprach Volksstimme-Redakteurin Elisa Sowieja mit den Zwillingen Bill und Tom Kaulitz.

Wie ist es, wieder zu Hause zu sein?
Bill: Herrlich! Leider sehen wir immer gar nichts von der Stadt, in der wir gerade sind - wobei wir Magdeburg nun schon kennen. Aber wir freuen uns trotzdem, dass wir hier sind.

Sie haben hier ein Konzert vor nur zwei Dutzend Zuh�rern gespielt. Wie hat sich das angef�hlt?
Bill: Das war ungewohnt! Ich finde es auch mal ganz sch�n, wenn einem die Leute so nahe sind.
Tom: Ich bin dann immer fast aufgeregter als sonst. Das f�hlt sich intimer an.

Sie sind schon seit vergangener Woche in Deutschland. Was haben Sie seitdem gemacht?
Tom: Wir machen von fr�h bis sp�t Promo f�r das neue Album. Morgens um 9 Uhr fangen wir an, und dann geht das bis 22 Uhr. Danach schlafen wir und fahren anschlie�end in die n�chste Stadt.
