N-TV.de: Tokio hotel are back!
Five years after their last album release “Humanoid” Germany’s former teenie band are back with a new album. Along their newest music: heavy growth of beard, autotune sound and lots of dirty things.
String vests, plateau shoes and wild manga hairstyles: There’s a lot of stuff going on in front of the Berlin movies “Babylon” on Thursday around lunchtime: Tokio Hotel are there! Suddenly the Berlin hipster scene, which is usually still deeply and soundly releaxed around that time of the day, is confronted with figures that can almost make you panic: “What’s going on here?”, says a woman with a buggy while she positions herself in front of her sleeping child. In front of her stands a young guy who’s wearing very striking feminine make up and knee-high leather boots as well as an almost completely naked chest only covered by a patent-leather coat, who’s giving the impression of a rather confused venus season ticket owner. The woman flees quickly and the leather boy walks away as well after his 7th selfie and goes into the direction of the movies.
Ten minutes later he’s inside together with one hundred other excited Tokio Hotel followers and the press. But the stars leave them waiting. It takes a twenty minute long introduction movie and three audio samples until the Kaulitz brothers enter the stage together with their two shadow figures Gustav Schfer and Georg Listing. An hysteric screaming and a frenzy of flashing cameras, which is similar to an Hollywood party event, welcomes them. It takes a few minutes until the musicians get a chance to speak. They came to gladly answer all kinds of questions.
Partying, smoking, drinking in L.A.
Unsurprisingly the twins take over the questions. The standard questions are quickly done. “They are happy about being back, they finally get the chance to eat German bread buns again and of course they are also looking forward to a little backstage chat with Megan Fox on the upcoming “Wetten, dass…” show on Saturday” say the two brothers who spent a good time in L.A. for the last few years.
And they did! They partied, smoked and drank, activities that unmistakeable inspired them musically for their new album: “We often were out until 6am in the morning and enjoyed our freedom. That’s also why the new album is rather electronic”, says singer Bill.
“Role models? We don’t give a damn.”
Did they really have to do all of that? The smoking and drinking? Doesn’t a band also always have a role model function? “We don’t give a damn”, says Bill. “Excuse me?”, throws Tom in. “Our fans don’t suddenly start smoking or drinking just because we do it. They know exactly that it’s unhealthy.”
All right. And what about the masturbating stuffed figures, a computer mouse that shows a vagina and indicated gangbangs? The video clips of their first songs that got released beforehand could even make Miley Cyrus blush bright red. The Kaulitz brothers stay relaxed. They just shrug astonished: “I didn’t notice the penis of the blue stuffed toy right away. We actually wanted him to be with us today but he didn’t get through customs”, says Tom. The fans shriek from the last row: this is about art. Or does anyone really believe that Bills indicted elevator sex with a chubby fourty year old dude is an indirect outing?
“Love should be boundless”
“Same-sex love is important to me” says Bill about the elevator scene. But the video is rather about the general image. “Love should be boundless.” A statement that gets rewarded with applause.
The two poster boys seem to have fun with the Q&A game. But we should grant them a little break. That’s why the next question is for Gustav and Georg. “Don’t you feel a bit excluded?” The fans bawl. Then everyone’s quiet. Gustav takes the microphone in his hand and says the following sentence: “We are used to that.” A smile flashes over his lips. You can read it as you wish.
One and an half hour of screaming fans, synthie autotune pop sound and more or less interesting information about the new album are more than enough. If you believe in Bills statement about “Kings of Suburbia” then “everyone with a good taste in music will love the new album.” My taste demands “Ramones” now. The day is back in balance now.
